Williston, ND (CollegeToCareers.com) – Williston State College brings some spice to those boring, slow week evenings. From February to May, the WSC Community Education program offers close to 30 courses focused on self development and professional enrichment. Most of them are very short – two to four classes – and will take place around the campus on 1410 University Avenue.
The first announced program is a self defense crash course led by Verlan Kvande and starts on February 17 at 6:30 p.m. The Community Education brochure advertises it as a way to “boost confidence and improve awareness” and advises participants to “be prepared, not afraid.” Registration deadline is on Feb. 14 and the course costs $45. Kvande said it would be a good pick for college-bound high school seniors who will be attending college this fall. He also hopes the class will lower the bullying rates as it will help kids “teach them jocks some manners.”
Another course already received lots of inquiry calls. It is the QuickBooks 2009, a class geared at small to mid-sized business owners to teach them the basics of accounting with the help of the QuickBooks product line. Self-taught bookkeepers can learn how to set up a chart of accounts, create and print invoices, record receipts and statements, reconcile the checking accounts, monitor payables and receivables, build budget forecasts and generate reports for the local financial controlling authorities. The course will be taught by Lee Murphy on the first three Tuesdays of March, from 6 to 9 p.m. The registration fee is $115 per participant and the deadline is set for February 10.
Kim Wenko, a Community Education Specialist at WSC, also expects the new series of leadership courses to raise interest among the local community. The first class will be offered on February 22nd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the WSC Crighton Building and will be named “Communication with Impact.” This course is a prerequisite for three further classes – Embracing Change, High-Impact Feedback and Listening and Navigating Beyond Conflict, – will cost $199 and has a registration deadline set for February 7th.
The Community Education program also offers more than 300 online classes. They start every one 90 days and cover a wide range of topics, from accounting and finance to language and arts or law and legal. For a complete list of classes available for registration, visit http://www.willistonstate.edu/ or call Wenko directly at 774-6236.
