Waitlist the Waitlist
Published on Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 by Ken Category: College Tips Community Colleges
In today’s world of higher education, more and more college students find themselves staring at a computer screen on their registration date only to see the waitlist as an option. However, there are certain measures a proactive student can take in order to avoid such a situation.
Priority Registration
Many community colleges and four-year universities offer what is known as “Priority Registration.” Those who already have it know it is a very helpful tool in obtaining the classes they desire. Priority registration is simply a status that says your date to register for classes is “bumped” up ahead of other students. Although it varies from school to school, this status is generally given to a specific population of the student body, including groups such as: student athletes, students with a large amount of credits accumulated, and students in honors and/or financial aid programs.
Count on Counselors
In almost every educational institution, there are a group of very educated people who specialize in answering questions asked most from college students. These people are counselors, and they are there at your college to help you. The use of a counselor is a very helpful tool in making sure you are prepared for your registration date. Counselors can assist you with anything from researching which classes you are required to take, to how you might be able to organize a personal class schedule tailored to your specific needs as well as your college major.
Prepare, Prepare, and Prepare Some More
Be it semester or quarter, you only get one registration date, and you want to make sure you don’t miss the chance to get the classes you want. Above all else, the most important and useful tool you have to avoid the class waitlist is preparation. In order to insure that you have the best chance possible to register for your classes, you can do simple things such as: mark your registration date on your calendar, make sure you have the classes you plan on registering for organized, and take any measures necessary to be in front of a computer when your registration date has arrived.
