What is a Vocational School, and are they for you?

Vocational schools provide training for specific careers

Cosmetology. Culinary Arts. Health Care.  Those are just some of the fields vocational schools can train people in.

But what exactly is a vocational school? In short, vocational schools help build skills and knowledge for specific jobs. Vocational schools offer training in specific fields, and give students enough skills to enter the work force.

Vocational schools are a good for individuals who want to enter the work force in a relatively short amount of time. They may also help someone learn more about the field they’re interested in, while having the opportunity to work once the vocational program is complete.

Through vocational schools, one can go from being a student to employed in their chosen field in a relatively short amount of time.  For example, attendees of a culinary arts vocational school could find work as a chef and/or pastry chef, because they were given the training necessary to enter that work field. In addition, the skills they learned can be applied in their jobs and improved upon with work experience.

Often times, vocational school or career college is a good choice for individuals who know they are interested in a specific field, like cosmetology, and want to find employment after completing their training. Additionally, if students attend a reputable and accredited vocational school, their chances of employment may even be higher. And given their hands-on experience in their respective fields, trade school graduates will be able to enter the field with a formidable amount of knowledge and skill.

However, vocational schools are not for everyone. Bypassing any kind of baccalaureate education and heading straight to vocational school prevents individuals from gaining a strong  educational background that could be valuable in other job areas, besides what one studies in trade school. While one may find employment in their field, it could prove to be difficult finding jobs in other fields without a solid education. Salaries and lifetime earnings can also vary greatly depending on what kind of employment one finds with vocational school training.

Anyone interested in vocational schools should understand the pro’s and con’s of attendance versus going to a two or four-year college or university. However, there will always be a demand for a bevy of different jobs, including ones that vocational school students train for. Vocational school gives students the opportunity to train and gain experience in a field they’re interested in, while also having a good possibility of employment once their training is complete.

Really good information. I have a question though. I am going in sept to study cosmetology in morris county school of technology (votech) in nj. Now i think this is an accredited school, but supposedly cosmetology is 1200 but they are offering 1000 hours. Why?
