Professional Resume

As more and more people are looking for jobs in this economy, having a professional resume is crucial in the area of finding a job.  There are various resume writing software and professional resume writers that are willing to create you a professional resume, but the person who will know the details of your work experience the best is you.  So let’s start by looking at what a resume is.  You can see the 3 types of resumes with examples of each on our 3 Types of Resumes to Consider article.

What is a resume and how do I make mine a Professional Resume?

The purpose of a resume is simply to get you a job interview.  Many people mistakenly think that by simply turning in a resume, they may get the job.  Although this may be the case with small businesses in the community, this is not typical in the workforce.  You would normally turn in your resume with the application for the job you are applying to.

The task would then be to develop a document that is both intriguing and informative to the employer.  You want to intrigue the employer by being focused with what they are looking for as stated in the job application.  Read the job requirements and descriptions carefully and list your experiences to address those exact points.  The goal to have a professional resume is to mirror the job description as best you can.

7 tips to make your resume a Professional Resume

1.    Do not turn in your first draft! Make sure you’ve had multiple sets of eyes look your resume over and give you feedback.
2.   No grammatical errors. Your resume should be free of any kind of spelling mistakes.
3.    Use action verbs (or what we like to call Power Verbs).
4.    Be VERY conscious of formatting negative space. Try to balance your resume by making things even on left and right margins.  For example, if you list the business you worked for on the left margin, write the dates of employment along the right margin to balance the page.
5.    Font size should be between 11 to 12 point font.
6.    Standard type fonts such as Arial or Times New Roman. Avoid fancy fonts as this is more of a distraction.
7.    Keep your resume to one page. The only exception is if you have a lot of experience directly pertaining to the job you are applying for.  If you are a graduating student, you probably don’t have enough experience to need 2 pages.  A professional resume for students will be 1 page.
