Going to a college or university means more than simply enrolling in classes and getting good grades. These educational institutions have a wide range of resources that serve the purpose of helping students meet their academic goals head-on. No one says you have to do everything on your own and whether you’re a college freshmen are an upperclassman, the resources below will always be available.

Academic Advisor

Even if you never stepped foot into your high school guidance counselor’s office, there is much to be gained from interacting regularly with your appointed academic advisor in college. Needless to say, the course load and various requirements that must be met for graduation can become very tedious and overwhelming. This is where seeking help from an academic advisor comes in handy, especially for those with declared majors and/or minors. The advisor for your degree program is the main person to give you assistance with breaking down which classes must be completed and when, as well as which path to take in order to obtain your desired degree. Make sure to meet with your advisor throughout the term to ensure that you’re on track towards graduation. This will also avoid any unpleasant surprises when it comes time to fill out your application for graduation.

Tutoring Center

Unless you’re a stellar student, there may come a time when you’ll need additional help with a particular subject or subjects. Take it upon yourself to visit the tutoring center on campus if there is one established and utilize the students and/or professors that make their time available. If there is no such tutoring center around, check the bulletin boards around campus. Private tutors often advertise on bulletin boards in the student center and in certain buildings on campus. While private tutors may charge, tutoring centers typically offer this service for free so it’s worth looking into if you’re falling behind in a class or two.

Office Hours

In high school, most teachers aren’t able to find the free time after school to answer a student’s questions. In college, office hours are designed to do just that. This is perhaps one of the most important resources college students can tap into. Sometimes additional assistance is needed that simply can’t be taken care of during class. Visiting a professor during his/her office hours is the time to receive one-on-one help with any of your questions or concerns. Not only does this give students the ability to better understand the material, it makes for a great impression on the professor. Many students end up forging great working relationships with their professors by attending office hours, which could result in a letter of recommendation later on down the line for internships, job interviews or other related events.

Student Health Center

Not all college students have healthcare and if you’re in this particular situation, having access to your school’s student health center could be a huge benefit. From the common cold to more serious symptoms and conditions, college students can get checked out and receive proper medical attention without having to step foot inside a traditional hospital or clinic.

Remember, your hard earned dollars are what makes the existence of such resources possible so why not take advantage of it and get the most out of your college career?
