Several school districts in Northern California have been planning and building living and housing complexes on or near campus for their employees, which include teachers, faculty, and other staff. The main idea is to provide a cheaper and more affordable option for housing, as well as to provide incentive for future prospective employees to become a part of the school district.

In recent years there has been a particular development in the housing industry, especially for teachers, faculty and employees of specific school districts. Several school districts in Northern California have been planning and building living and housing complexes on or near campus for their employees, which include teachers, faculty, and other staff. The main idea is to provide a cheaper and more affordable option for housing, as well as to provide incentive for future prospective employees to become a part of the school district.

Most recently, Cañada College campus in the Redwood City area of California has just opened their own 60 unit development after a total of three years of planning and construction. The houses are located on the Cañada College campus, and provide a panoramic view of the peninsula as well as the San Francisco Bay. As if this were not reason enough for employees of the San Mateo Community College District to move in, the development offers units of up to three bedrooms with monthly rates ranging from $950 to $1600 dollars, which is considerably cheaper than most houses on the market today. The rental housing units are modeled after the already existing 44 unit complex of College Vista at the College of San Mateo (CSM) located a short drive north.

A quick overview of the apartment houses at Cañada Vista begins once you step through the front door. All of the 60 residences on the vista include hardwood flooring in the entryways, which lead to spacious rooms with nine foot ceilings. The deluxe kitchens offer gas stoves, Energy Star appliances including refrigerators, as well as upgraded cabinetry. The rest of the home is just as impressive, complete with individual washers and dryers, a walk in closet in the master bedroom, linen closet, and central air conditioning, the homes at Cañada Vista are almost too good to believe. Throughout the house are large picture windows, sliding glass doors, a large private patio/deck, and on many units, a private attached garage as well. To top it all off, the homes include wiring for computer and internet access with individual utility meters.

Cañada College and the College of San Mateo of the San Mateo Community College District (SMCCD) are not the only school districts to think about or build and open these housing developments for their employees. It is worth noting that other school districts such as the Santa Clara Unified School District and the San Mateo Foster City School District have already built apartments or are considering the idea to for a while now.
