In college, there is no one to tell you what you need for school or what you should bring to class. It’s not like elementary or middle school anymore, when your teachers used to hand out a list of school supplies to shop for at the beginning of the year. Your college professor is there to teach, and provide further clarification on the subject material, but not to remind you to bring your books every class. Instead, it is up to the college or university student to be prepared and come to class ready with the materials needed in order to be a successful and organized student. In some ways even, preparing the necessary materials is a major part of earning the grade and the GPA that you desire. So what types of materials would a typical college or university student need to carry with them? Below is a list of essential items (and some not so essential) a student should have with them on a college or university campus:

College Textbooks: always a must when taking a college or university course. Although your professor may say you are not required to bring your textbook, bringing it regardless allows you opportunities to mark down pages that are reviewed in class your professor, or to study from if you have a break in between classes.

Pen & paper: probably the two most important things of all school supplies any student could carry around with them. A pen and paper allow you to take notes, reminders, and other important information necessary to getting you the grade you desire and deserve.

Pencil & eraser: although these two can be used to take notes like a pen and paper, it is still essential for a student to carry a pencil and eraser on campus, especially for those math classes where a student can make plenty mistakes that need to be corrected on paper.

Calculator: very useful and in most cases a mandatory tool for higher level math classes. It is important to carry a calculator, however simple, as there are many different math calculations that a student might want to perform outside of class. Examples of this could be a student calculating their overall grade percentage in a class, or how high he or she might need to score on their next midterm/final in order to pass, or bump their grade one letter higher than it currently is.

Highlighter: very useful for marking down key terms in a book, or things that a professor tells you might be on an exam from your notes.

iPod/MP3 Player: not a completely necessary item, but very useful for blocking out surrounding distractions, or to relax and take a break after studying for an exam.

This is merely a very basic list of the items a college or university student should have with them at all times. Carrying these materials will enable one to be as prepared as possible in terms of performing tasks such as: taking notes, calculating answers to problems, and marking down important pages in your textbooks, which, when completed successfully will reflect upon your overall grade in each of your college courses.

College Textbooks: “Get them early, and get them cheap!”

In colleges and universities around the country today, there is a multitude of students struggling and fighting to pass a college course. Regardless of your college major, there will always be that one subject, class, or professor that you can never really seem to wrap your mind around. However, there is a definite and reliable way to make sure that you have the best chance to not only pass, but succeed and excel in these courses. Below is a list of specific examples you can complete in order to make your education experience both easier and more enjoyable:

What can I do to get the grade I want?

Research

A major error that many college students make is picking the wrong class. If you do not know anything about the class you register for, how can you expect to be prepared and do well? Looking for the right subject to fulfill your college major is simply not good enough; you must research your classes before you ever register. This not only gives you a better chance at getting into the class, but also helps you avoid the waitlist. A very easy and fast way to give yourself a better chance before you take the course can be found through websites that give you more information about the courses such as: ratemyprofessor.com, collegetocareers.com, and your own college website. In addition to going online and gathering some background information on your classes, taking the extra step in meeting your professor to be is very good idea. This allows you to see the professor that may be giving you a final grade face to face, and anything you might like or dislike about them.

Researching your classes before you take them is just one of many little things you can do in order to improve your chances of getting the grade you want. In Part 2 of Tips to Succeed in College Courses: In-Class & Online, I will go over specific examples you can apply to your own college experience in and out of class to not only pass, but succeed and excel as well.
