What is Graphic Design?

There are many different definitions people identify graphic design by. One of the most common definitions is the practice of utilizing various graphical elements to create an end result that not only looks good but is functional as well. To help put this term in better perspective, graphic designers are typically hired to help design, create and implement a company’s ideas and/or concepts. For example, if a business wants to build an official website, they’ll turn to a professional graphic designer to assist them in bringing their ideas from paper onto the Internet. Or if an individual wants to create a menu for a new restaurant, they may ask for the opinion and skills of a graphic designer to make sure that the text, colors, images and layout is one that will attract customers. There is literally no end to the roles that someone in this job position can play.

Pursuing a Degree in Graphic Design

Do you love art and multimedia? Have you always enjoyed bringing other people’s visions to life? Then obtaining a degree in Graphic Design may be a step in the right direction for you. Because of the popularity of this field, there is no shortage of colleges, universities and art schools that offer extensive degree programs in this subject. While each educational institution has its own specific curriculum for its students, those hoping to get a Graphic Design degree can expect to be exposed to the following elements in their courses:

• Basics of Design: typography, digital design, layout, visual communication tools
• Mastering Software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, QuarkXpress, In Design and other related, up-to-date design software
• Color Theory and Digital Imaging
• Animation, Audio/Visual Communications, Websites and Video Production

There are many other courses involved in this type of degree program, which serves the purpose of making sure students receive a well-rounded education and have exposure to virtually all aspects of the industry that will teach them the skills needed to become viable candidate for future jobs.

Career Possibilities

Because the demand for graphic design skills is constant, graduates with a degree in this field will have a variety of job opportunities available to them. Additionally, graphic design is a very broad industry, which means there is flexibility in the types of positions an individual can become employed in. Many professional graphic designers go on to work for large design firms, where their skills and expertise are contributed in a team environment. The levels of advancement in this atmosphere are also very high, which can allow anyone to move up in the ranks. For those that prefer to work solo, having a background in graphic design allows for the opportunity of becoming self-employed and working in an independent contractor/freelance capacity. This means being your own boss, setting your work hours/schedule and having the ability to pick and choose your clients and projects accordingly.
