Most traditional college students enroll in 12-15 semester units (3-5 classes). That’s the standard schedule for college students, and this schedule is what is usually referred to as a “full-time schedule”, which is reiterated to students all the time. But let’s be honest, a schedule that light can hardly be recognized as full. Students alike all get to experience the same holidays everyone else does like people with a full time job, except people who work have to work 40 or more hours per week! If you want to have more time in college, get more degrees or even get a job. Just because your friends do, it doesn’t mean you have to go at an extremely slow pace.

You might think that those semester units will equate to 40 plus hours a week but really they won’t. They will equate to 40 plus hours if you work inefficiently, but the idea is to work efficiently unlike most people. Most assignments only require a few hours per week to complete if completed efficiently and effectively. Quality always comes over quantity when it comes to studying.

Let’s be honest, if you’re academically more capable or an above average student, you can certainly handle an above average schedule. You won’t know how much you can handle until you push yourself more. If you only think you can handle 15 units, take 18. Don’t waste time in college, be productive.

It’s the law of forced efficiency: the more work you have on your plate, you’ll find that you will by force work a lot more efficiently and much harder than usual, and you’ll come out with much better results.

Taking an extra class will mean you’ll gain more friends, knowledge and experience. Also, taking an extra class really will give you that edge when it comes to looking for employment. Not many employers will turn down a person who decided to take an extra class at college – these are the sorts of people who can get interviews just like that. It looks great on your resume, it has to be said. Employers really do catch up on these things, so if you think you’re above average, let both you and the world know!
