In recent years, there have been multiple campus emergencies across the nation. These emergencies include everything from bomb threats to campus shootings and massacres. To be specific, tragedies such as the Virginia Tech massacre and the more recent shooting at Skyline College in San Bruno has stirred talks and planning about how to better campus security and student safety. Across the country, colleges and universities are struggling to find solutions and effective preventive measures to deal with these campus emergencies.

San Bruno, CA (CollegeToCareers) – In recent years, there have been multiple campus emergencies across the nation.

However, as positive and good and this may sound, finding such solutions and implementing preventive measures are not as easy as it sounds. This is mainly due to the large obstacle of legal implications and liability towards the school.

Regardless of the legal implications and any hesitations that colleges may have about increasing campus safety, the issue of keeping students safe will always remain a challenge for staff and faculty. In other words, no preventive measures or plans are foolproof. Colleges and universities have tried everything from new state of the art alarm systems and sirens to updated text message systems and letters regarding student condition from psychologists.

Although these campus emergencies occur very infrequently, they are extremely hard to prepare for. For the same reason, the rarity of these serious situations makes it very difficult to compare against other campus emergencies in order to learn how to better adapt and respond to future cases and avoid future disasters.
