The importance of education has always been highlighted and stressed throughout the history of the United States. From an early age, children are sent to preschools and kindergarten. When they become older, elementary and middle schools become a place of learning and educational growth. By the time these children become adolescents, high schools come around. It is after this stage of secondary education that becomes the defining line between high school graduates who go on to achieve and receive a college degree or end their educational careers as it stands. And it is essentially this difference that creates the distinction between what are considered high and low wages.

Throughout the United States of America, there are thousands of institutions available for those seeking higher education and a college or university degree. Many students from the fifty states make the choice to continue their education when they apply to their college or university of choice. However, there is one state in particular that is drawing attention in their higher education statistics, and not in a good way.

Recently, the state of Utah has been falling behind in the number of women applying to and attending a college or university. A study commissioned by the Utah System of Higher Education revealed that Utahans believe that the male gender should receive more education that women. Similarly, only a low amount of 35 percent of women and 39 percent of men believe that the female gender should attain a bachelor’s degree in the state of Utah.

There are several ideas as to the low number of women attending college in Utah. One student from the LDS (Latter Day Saints) Business College Ayesha Magalvi states: “I think in our religion it’s easy to just get married and just have the guy take care of us.” However, this is not the viewpoint that many of the other students at LDS Business College take. Raquel Lamb tells us: “I want to go to the U, start pre-nursing and then get into the nursing program… My parents have raised me to finish school.” Likewise, Abby Brammer is working to: “Get a degree in English literature and a minor in biology or history, and then go to law school.”

Another approach to why Utah is last in the nation for the percentage of female students enrolled in colleges or universities comes from economist Lecia Parks Langston. She believes that:

“culturally a lot of women think they are not going to work and then they end up working.”

It is important to note that whether single, divorced, married, with kids or without kids, most women in Utah will work. In response to the negative statistics, the state of Utah has launched a two-year long project with goals of understanding and motivating younger women to enter and remain in education long enough to obtain a college or university degree.

Western Association of Schools and Colleges

For those of you unfamiliar with WASC, it is the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the accrediting commission for schools. WASC is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States. The Commission provides assistance to schools located in California, Hawaii, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and East Asia.

SJSU Global Studies Online College Courses

By electing this Global Studies program, students will be able to complete the last two years of their BA degree entirely online. Students will be taking high-quality courses accessible 24/7 from anywhere in the world. The program is open to “non-local” students from outside Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, and to international students who will be able to complete their BA degrees while living in their home countries. This is definitely incentive to look into their program.

SJSU is still accepting college applications for the Global Studies program for Fall semester. The deadline is just about here with it being July 15, 2010.

If you are interested in this online college degree, visit SJSU’s Global Studies program.

Community College

The higher educational system across the country is seeing the effects of the economy with an increase of enrollment, budget cuts, and an increase in costs. Many four year universities are now encouraging students to start at a community college. This may be a great option for graduating high school students.

A more cost effective way to approach your college education is to start with your first two years at a community college, complete your general education (GE) courses, choose a college major and transfer to a four year college or university. Your first two years of college are going to be general education courses regardless of where you take them. Might as well have them be at a community college such as Skyline College where fees are $26 a unit, compared to $200+ a unit at a four year college.

The Baltimore Sun claims Maryland University leaders find themselves in the unusual position of encouraging students to take their initial classes not in the state system but at community colleges.

“Two years of community college followed by two years at a university is simply a cheaper formula — for the student and the state — than four years at a university. “If we’re going to find a way to keep higher education affordable, community colleges are going to play a very significant role,” says William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the state’s university system.”

Thousands of transfer students have been saving money by pursuing a community college first, figuring out their college major, then attaining a bachelor’s degree from the university of choice. Many universities have agreements with community colleges guaranteeing them admissions into their university after completing course work at the community college. The degree shows you the bachelor’s from the four year university and no where does it say the student was a transfer.

Recruiters are starting to make more visits to community colleges in search of transfers. The university system is investing grant money to help community colleges keep their students in transfer programs until they complete them. The federal government is also investing grant money in the forms of programs such as TRIO: Student Support Services which is geared towards assisting students that have the goal of transferring to a four year college.

In an interview with Secretary of Higher Education, James E. Lyons, he stated “everything is in place.” He recalls that as president of four-year California State University, Dominguez Hills, he used to send college representatives to the local community colleges in Southern California so that students would know exactly what they had to do to transfer without losing credits. He doesn’t see that level of engagement at other four year campuses.

College Majors: “If you’re unsure of your major and are researching schools, keep a community college in mind!”
