On Thursday, January 27, MCCC hosted the financial aid and college scholarships workshop in the Community Hall at West Campus in Pottstown. The program covered most aspects of financial planning for college, with a clear focus on explaining the true cost of education (which doesn’t always match the amount of a full scholarship,) as well as financial aid sources from various state, government and private agencies.

PA Treasurer Rob McCord was invited as a guest speaker and gave an outline of the Pennsylvania 529 College Savings Program – what they are, how they work, the differences between the two plans and how to get started. McCord is directly interested in the best investment plans, as his two kids will go off to college within the next few years.

Interest-laden loans with the Pennsylvania 529 Plans are a smart way to invest in those you love.”

After the opening lectures, two rounds of Q&A sessions were held. Parents of mid and high school students were able to discuss the differences between the PA 529 Guaranteed Savings Plan (GSP) and the 529 Investment Plan to help them decide which one suited them best. Families of high school students were assisted with filing in the FAFSA application.

Montgomery County Community College was founded in 1964 and has quickly grown into one of the county’s leading educational facility. They stand out among colleges in the United States with their clever use of technology and have been ranked #1 in the nation by the Center for Digital Education in 2008. The college has two campuses in Pennsylvania – in Pottstown and Blue Bell – as well as several other learning centers in Willow Grove, Lansdale, Conshohocken and Norristown. Their curriculum is quite impressive: with 82 associate degrees and certificate programs in 48 fields, MCCC is truly a great place to study at.
