Students File Lawsuits Against Westwood College
Published on Monday, August 30th, 2010 by James Category: College News
You’ve probably already seen the numerous warnings about picking the right colleges. While the reasons can range from not being able to afford the tuition all the way to being fooled into participating in something that won’t mean anything in the long run. The fact still stands that students need to be careful about choosing a college, especially when it comes to online colleges.
This post was inspired by a news article found on the Milwaukee News Buzz. The buzz is that students are filing lawsuits against Westwood College.
Improper College Accreditation
Westwood College was providing one of these students with an Interior Design course, which wasn’t accredited by the Wisconsin Department of Education when she enrolled in the course. According to the student, they promised that they would become accredited before she finished up with her online college courses.
This promise soon became exposed as a lie later on.
When this lawsuit started gaining popularity among the media, investigations started to dig a little deeper for reliable information about the truth behind this whole thing. Come to find out, the Wisconsin Department of Education never even received an application for Westwood College to become accredited in the state of Wisconsin.
This is getting to be a little sketchy, but I’m not going to jump to conclusions yet as this is still in its beginning stages.
The Outcome of This Student’s Experience
When a student needs financial assistance for college, they usually take out federal student loans, apply for college grants or college scholarships. That’s exactly what this student did, and Westwood College ended up maxing her out on her student loans when scholarships weren’t an option, preventing her from getting any more financial assistance to complete the program.
Needless to say, she ended up paying a high price for an online education and didn’t even earn the degree in Interior Design that she was hoping for. There are also other lawsuits against Westwood College that are still pending in the beginning stages.
College Tip from James: This is a prime example of why it’s important to only attend colleges that are accredited by the Department of Education. Regardless of what they promise, they need to have the proper certifications to present you a college degree after you successfully complete their program.

? QUESTION ?
Why would our contry even allow “for profit” schools to be in opperation. Don’t students go to college for a better life. Is not the job of advisors and college reps. to properly and ethically guide students to obtaining a worthy degree.
I am a former Westwood student. My expience is the same as the rest. Action need’s to be taken. I am now closing in on $100,000 in student loan debts, my degree is worthless.

Matthew,
It’s sad to say, but there are too many students in the same shoes. Recently, an article was published on “Proprietary Colleges Accused of Scamming Vulnerable Populations at Senate Hearing.” The story is similar to the many students suffering all across the country! Here is the article if you would like to read more about it: For-profit Scamming
Is there not anything that a we can do to stop this or at least get into some lawsuits that have already been filed against them?
