Sometimes Getting High Grades Isn’t The Best Thing

Estero, Florida – Jenny Williamson, who is currently a student at Florida Gulf State University, quickly realized that there was also a negative side to getting good grades. Every student thinks that it’s the best thing to do, especially if you’re going to end up needing help to pay for your college education. However, getting good grades can now prevent you from getting certain forms of financial aid assistance.

The Truth About The Situation

What it amounts to is that there are certain college financial aid programs such as the Support Services Program. This government grant is designed for first-generation college students, so that the burden of being in debt after college is as little as possible.

However, there’s a catch to this assistance that’s made possible by funds from the United States Department of Education. The students must also demonstrate an academic need for this particular grant. This means that the student must have bad grades or have a bad academic history that clearly states that they could benefit from programs designed to help better college students.

For students such as Jenny, this automatically disqualifies them for this grant since having good grades is far from showing that they have an academic need that could be filled by grants such as the one offered with the Support Services program.

Many Other College Students Were Disqualified As Well

Jenny Williamson wasn’t the only college student that found herself disqualified from the Support Services Program due to her exceptional grades. 65 college students were disqualified from this program and 41 other college students were place on a waiting list. This goes to show that doing poorly in school makes government agencies reach out to help when you make it to the point to where you’re trying to obtain a college degree.

What does this mean for college grants?

It really doesn’t change the situation on college grants, as there are grants that are tailored specifically towards specific college students. When you’re not eligible for one, there will always be another one that you have a good chance of winning. It’s a matter of fulfilling the needs of our quickly changing world and providing everyone with the opportunity for higher education when it all comes down to it.
