California Community Colleges Will Increase Tuition- Fall 2011
It’s official, today, the California Governor, Jerry Brown, signed SB 70, the education trailer bill, which includes the student fee increase from $26 to $36 per credit unit effective fall semester 2011 in California community colleges. This is going to be a major hit to keeping community colleges inexpensive and affordable for all members of the community. Now, a full time student will be expected to pay $432 a semester as opposed to $312 a semester for tuition alone. This does not take into consideration the additional costs that come with attending school such as textbooks, supplies, transportation, etc.
As the state works on ways to patch the holes in our current budget, it would appear as though education, including community colleges, California State Universities, and the Universities of California system, are being hit with major cuts.
The main budget bill, SB 69, has yet to be enacted, however, community college districts may begin to charge the new $36 fee rate for fall 2011 classes.
Stay tuned as we bring you updates to the tuition fee changes and the overall budget.
