Choosing The Right College Major
When it comes to college and choosing the right major, most students have a tough decision to make. Often we have a vague idea of what we want to do but pinning that down to an exact major can be difficult. However, that doesn’t mean that choosing a major is an impossible task, it just means that you need to plan out some steps and consider a number of different things before you make your decision. Before you make your final decision, consider the following:
Choosing College Major For Job Prospects
Have a look at what the potential jobs you might be able to get along the lines of your major. Look into if jobs are local or whether you would need to move, what the salary is like and how likely it is to get a job immediately after your graduate.
Long Term Personal Goals
Although it can be hard you need to consider what your life wants to be like in the long term. Do you want to travel, have children, and get married? Will your chosen career fit around all of these or is it worth reconsidering what you want to do in order to compromise.
Long Term Career Goals
Consider whether the career that you have chosen is really something that you would want to do in 10, 20 or even 30 year’s time. Although it is likely that you will have changed your mind by then, it is worth considering when you look into choosing your major.
Consider Reasons For Wanting The Job
Make sure you know the real reasons why you want this particular career. Fair enough money will be a large part of it but you should bear in mind that finances do change and therefore you should look into job satisfaction and whether it will make you happy in the long run.
Consider All Options
Often different colleges offer slightly different versions of the major you have chosen. Do your research and see what your options are before you decide. That way you can be sure that the major is definitely the right one for you
Don’t Be Afraid Of Change
On average, students change majors at least 3 times in college. While some colleges are flexible, others may not be. If there is a major that you want to do but maybe want to add a double major, talk to your counselor to find out the additional requirements. Colleges often like the fact that you are being proactive and are doing what you can to accommodate the the requirements of the school and your major.
Although choosing a major at your college can be a hard decision, as long as you take a sensible approach there is no reason at all why you wouldn’t be able to find the exact match for you. It is basically a decision that should not be rushed and you should look at all the avenues open to you. Use your resources, especially counselors and advisers to help make an informed decision. Think about your long term goals so that you can be sure that the major you have chosen to study is right for you.
