Online College Courses at NYU

Traditional colleges and universities across the country see the value in offering an increased number of online college courses at their institutions.  Why the interest in online classes?  Although the student/ teacher exchanges would drastically decrease, it’s a form of communication and educational presentation that appeals to many people, especially the younger generation.  In addition, the current state of economy has most people preferring to work and provide for their families over becoming a full time student.  Online courses have provided a solution for schools and students across this country to reach a wider network of people.

In a recent article in Newsweek, Minnesota Governor Pawlenty spoke of the rise of “iCollege,” or in this case, online classes that people can take, download, and substitute for traditional courses.  Although the notion of this is appealing to some, academia will not give in easily to allow traditional institutions transform themselves into colleges offering complete degrees online.  New York University is trying to become the first to fully marry 18th-century standards with 21st-century technology through interactive video courses.  More schools are following behind NYU’s technological advances with online college course expansions.

The Governor’s vision already has some what of a network of support.  For example, Pennsylvania’s university system is considering making its language courses online only.  Not to mention Indiana, who recently added an “affordable” Web-based campus for students.  Even elite colleges in the US such as the prestigious Yale Law School is sharing resources with the University of the People, a pioneering “global college” that’s tuition-free and totally online.

As the internet becomes a more acceptable global classroom for students, classrooms will find students at their homes and in their computers more frequently.  It will be interesting to see where the next few decades takes online college courses and education as a whole.
