Private College Scholarships by the Mitchell Institute

As more and more students search for college scholarships, private foundations are becoming heavily sought out.  Yet, not many students know where to look for college scholarships outside of their colleges.  Our goal is to provide you with a variety of scholarships for college that students from different states can consider to help them finance college.

College  Scholarships by George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute

George Mitchell, former senate leader, has shown great commitment to the Main community by providing help to graduating high school students through the work of his George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute, which he founded in 1994.  Each year the institute awards college scholarships to graduating seniors from public high school in Maine. Some of the requirements of the program include demonstrating a combination of high academic standing, community service and financial need.

This past weekend, Mitchell was at the University of Maine highlighting scholarship recipients.  About 50 students, along with their parents, families, and friends, all came together to celebrate this festive event.

The College Scholarship Award

Each recipient received approximately a $5,000 scholarship.  In addition, the Mitchell Institute offered recipients participation in academic and professional mentoring, career coaching and paid internship opportunities.  One of the stipulations of this college scholarships is that students must attend any college within the state of Maine, and one student from each of Maine’s 16 counties may attend an out-of-state school.

According to the BangorDailyNews, students from this year’s class scholarship recipients have been accepted to many  public and private colleges in the state of Maine, as well as institutions such as Yale University, Endicott College, Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, and other out of state colleges.  The Mitchell Institute has given out more than $8 million in scholarships.
