Merit scholarships which are also commonly called academic scholarships are made available to those who strive to maintain academic excellence. Mostly those who qualify for these scholarships graduate within the top 5-10 percentile of their class.
Even though being strong academically plays the biggest part on merit scholarships, these are also scholarships that are given to athletes in order to assist them with covering any educational expenses that they may incur while participating in college sports.
How do I find Merit Scholarships?
These types of college scholarships are mainly offered through the schools directly. Make sure that you read the requirements, as there are many which require you to win some sort of academic special title while others simply want you to beat a certain score when taking the ACT or SAT.
Merit scholarships might seem to be one of the most common forms of scholarships at your preferred college/university it’s not every day that large sums are given away. In fact, many students find it better for them to go for other forms of scholarships that have much larger payouts.
How do I qualify for Merit Scholarships?
As I said in the previous section, each merit scholarships come with their own requirements that must be fulfilled in order to even come close to obtaining them. While some may want you to be very outgoing when it comes to extracurricular activity, some others may have you fulfilling a certain amount of community service.
It all really depends upon what the scholarship fund is meant for. If you’ve proven yourself as a leader or as a valuable asset in any other way, there may be certain organizations that want to reach out to you more than others.
Is it hard to get Merit Scholarships?
This question really isn’t fair, considering merit scholarships do take a little more work than any other scholarships that you may have looked into before. The main reason for this is that it’s going off of what you have achieved academically during your previous education stints.
You do need to finish with excellent grades, attendance, and reputation as a student. While it’s smart to participate in extra-curricular activities, it’s not always required for all merit scholarships. When it comes down to it, a merit scholarship is only as hard as you make it. If you’re striving to do the best that you can do, it shouldn’t even be a problem for you.
As you should be able to see, merit scholarships could help you pay for your college expenses. However, the wisest move is to apply for merit scholarships and other types of scholarships since they are so competitive. This way, you can actually have a better chance at getting a scholarship than you would if you just applied for one merit scholarship.
