Important: Send your high school transcripts to your community college [IGETC]

Students who have nearly completed their IGETC requirements and plan on transferring to a UC should be aware of Area 6 – Languages Other Than English. This language requirement is only needed for the University of California (not CSU’s), and if you have completed two or more years of foreign language in high school, that will take care of Area 6. However, it is important to make sure that your college has your high school transcript on file, otherwise, counselors cannot certify IGETC for you, which could be problematic when transferring to a UC.
While the IGETC is not mandatory, it is a streamlined method of completing the UC’s General Education Breadth Requirements. It is not only important to make sure you have met these requirements, but that you are on track for certification as well.
This is why it is important to send your high school transcripts to your community college. Some high schools do not encourage students to send their transcripts to community colleges, but if you are planning on completing the IGETC, and do not want to take any additional language courses, make sure that your college has your high school transcript on file. This way, counselors can certify your IGETC for Area 6 knowing that you satisfied language requirements in high school. Go to your campus admissions and records department to verify that they have your transcript on file. Otherwise, you may encounter problems at your transfer institution concerning this language requirement and completing of your General Education because you are not IGETC Certified.
Check in with a counselor to see if your college major requires additional foreign language courses, and visit assist.org to double check this. Use IGETC to stay on track with these requirements, and to make sure you are meeting the required number of units to transfer.
