College degree courses and majors were originally designed to be completed in just 4 years. In recent years, that average has gone up. It has become the trend to take around 6 years to complete the same amount of work. Most people insist that it is impractical to actually finish college in just 4 years, however here are steps you can take to make sure that you do graduate from college in 4 years.

Think Ahead -If your long term goal is to graduate college in 4 years then you need to think ahead of time. In high school, you need to make sure that you get decent grades for both math and English. If you don’t get high grades in these subjects then the first year of college could be taken up with having to re-sit them, which will of course hold you back.
Take Advice & Follow It -Your college counselor will be able to best advise you on the way that you can be successful in college. Make sure you sit down with them and take as much advice as they will give you. You then need to set goals and targets to ensure that you can follow this advice as much as possible.
Work Out A Schedule -You need to get a break down of the courses you will need to complete your general education courses and major requirements. For example if there are 120 semester units in your major needed to graduate, then you won’t complete this very quickly buy doing one class a month. Work out how many units there are to do and divide them by how quickly you want to complete the major and this should give you an idea of how hard you need to work to achieve your 4 year goal.
Stay Motivated -It is not hard to slip behind on classes. In fact just missing a couple of classes could mean you missing out on vital information. It is a vicious circle and the more you miss the further you get behind. You need to ensure that you do well in your classes and the best way to do this is to attend them all. Work at achieving good grades throughout your classes and you will soon be on your way to completing your course.
Be careful with part time jobs -While it is understandable that you may need to take on a part time job to fund your time at college, this should not be detrimental to the college work that you do. Try and get a job that is not too demanding and that won’t interfere with college or study time. Workstudy on campus can be helpful in this situation.
Decide on your Major ASAP -You should look at deciding on your major as soon as possible. If possible do this while you are at college taking general education classes. If not, then definitely by your sophomore year in college. Get advice from professors and college counselors and once you have made your decision about the major you want to take, stick with it.
Remember the paper work -When it comes to your graduation year you need to fill out all the paperwork promptly. Many students forget the necessary documents jeopardizing their graduation date. Fill out the graduation documents and any verifications early so that you proceed through commencement as easy as possible.
