Summer Vacation Fun in the Sun: Making the Most of Your Summer Vacation

With a little over a month left of school, summer is approaching fast. For many community college students, the thought of summer conjures up images of fun in the sun and catching up with friends. Although summer vacation is meant to be restful and relaxing, it can also be productive and useful.

How can I make the most of my summer?

Many students find themselves at a loss for things to do during summer vacation. As a result, by the time fall semester comes along, students feel like their vacation passed way too quickly. To make the most of your summer, it is helpful to begin planning the things you want to do in advance.

What kind of activities do you have in mind?

There are many productive and enjoyable things that a community college student can look forward to doing over the summer.  For many transferring community college students, this upcoming summer is the perfect opportunity to visit university campuses and get to know their future schools. In many cases, the campus visit is the deciding factor between two schools that a student is choosing between. On a campus visit, one might find a particular aspect of the school’s environment or facilities to be more to their taste than another.

And if I’m not transferring this fall?

For community college students who are still working on their transfer requirements or are simply working towards an associates degree, there are many other things to do in order to make the most of your summer vacation.

Take, for example, the summer internship

Every summer, many community college students take up a internship position for a company or business relating to their major. This is a great way to build experience and gain knowledge in your specific field of study. Not only do internships provide a first-hand view of your major at work, you have the opportunity to create contacts and relationships with people who might be helpful to you later in on in your career. In addition, attaining a summer internship is a great way to strengthen your resume for future job interviews and positions.

I’m not interested in being an intern, what else can I do?

If being an intern isn’t for you, there are still numerous things to make the most of your summer. For example, taking up a part-time job is a great way to make some extra spending cash while still giving you enough time to hang out and have some fun with friends. And as with an internship position, every job you hold – be it part-time or full-time –  can be a helpful addition to your resume in the future.

So be it visiting campuses, holding a summer internship position, or taking up a part-time job, there are many things for community college students to do this upcoming summer. The important thing is to stay occupied and not to find yourself bored with nothing to do over the summer. Instead, plan ahead, stay active, and see yourself looking back on the summer vacation thinking: I had a really productive and enjoyable summer vacation.
