Finding Your College Scholarships Early

Finding college scholarships is a process that you should start early in the year, ideally in the summer for the upcoming year.  Many college students have school as the last thing in their minds during summer.  But what college students need to understand is that finding scholarships for college takes time, and the sooner you start looking for them, the sooner you will find scholarships that match your criteria.

Here are some tips to help you with the college scholarship hunting process:

1. Start Early.  Start researching college scholarships in the in the summer if you hope to get one in the fall.  Start in the fall for scholarships being awarded the following spring.
2. Find Your Match. Every college scholarship and college grant will have its own requirements.  You want to make sure you find a scholarship that matches your needs (i.e. college major, scholarship for parents, minority scholarships, etc.)
3. Think Outside The Box.  Look for scholarships in places you would not normally look.  Non profit organizations, boys and girls clubs, CollegeToCareers.com, etc.).
4. Apply for the Scholarship.  After you find a college scholarship that matches your criteria, you want to apply for it early.  Don’t wait until the deadline approaches to start the college application as many students do.  Start early, edit, proof read, and send in a clean final draft.
