Easy Dorm Room Cooking: 10 Meal Ideas
Published on Thursday, April 21st, 2011 by Caroline Category: College Tips
Being a college student sometimes puts eating on the back burner. We’ve put together an easy list of 10 meals that are tasty and easy to make…even in our Dorm room! So, if you’re looking for some easy meal ideas, well you’ve come to the right place.
Bagels
Bagels are a quick, easy, and filling. Buy a bag of Bagels at your local supermarket and it will last you the rest of the week! Simply toast it, add cream cheese (or your choice of a spread), and slap it together. Bagels are great on-the-go meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can add salmon, turkey, roast beef, etc. if you have some extra time and feel like having something gourmet.
Macaroni and Cheese
Mac-n-Cheese is another quick meal every college student should keep in their dorm. Making Mac-n-Cheese takes anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to whip up, depending on whether you are preparing the Kraft Mac-n-Cheese or making your own homemade Mac-n-Cheese.
Quick Pancakes
Quick pancakes are another easy meal. Grab a bag of pre-made quick pancake mix. Add water, milk, egg, vanilla extract, pour it onto a heated griddle or pan, and you’ve got yourself a quick fix of pancakes for breakfast!
Pasta
Pasta–a staple in every college students diet. Although the actual pasta takes a little longer to cook through, it is a simple and versatile dish to prepare. The great thing about pasta is that it tastes just as good as leftovers and can be paired with almost anything and still taste delicious. If you’re a pasta lover, I would suggest taking an hour out of your weekend to cook enough pasta noodles to last you throughout the week. Run your fresh boiled pasta through cold water to ensure that they do not stick together and stick your reserves in the fridge. This way, you will be able to just throw whatever topping you want over it throughout the week and have fast, easy, delicious pasta everyday.
Quesadillas
Quesadillas–stock up on tortillas and cheese on your weekly trip to the supermarket and you’re ready to go! Like pasta, quesadillas are also easy versatile dishes to prepare. You are free to have some fun, mix it up, and put whatever you want–or whatever you have in your fridge–in your little cheesy bites or heaven.
Anything Potato
Anything potato is generally a quick, easy, and fulfilling fix. Buy a bag of potatoes at your local supermarket and see what you can come up with! I highly suggest you take advantage of that potato button on your microwave as it is a revolutionary tool for hungry colleges students that are constantly on the go.
Sandwiches
BLT, Club sandwich, Cheesesteak sandwich, Monte Cristo sandwich, Poorboy sandwhich, grilled cheese sandwich and oh of course–the classic peanut butter and jelly–the possibilities are endless when it comes to sandwiches. Stock up on some bread and let your imagination run wild.
Canned Soups
Canned soups–the selection is endless and they take less than ten minutes to prepare!
- Pop open your canned soup
- Pour the soup into a pot
- Wait for it to boil
…and you’ve got yourself a meal!
Top Ramen & Cup of Noodle
Last but not least is the college food staples that fed so many of our forefathers… Top Ramen & Cup of Noodle! Both are easy to prepare (just add hot water), have long storage lives, and are instantly gratifying!
