CSU General Education Waiver
The California State University (CSU) system requires all students to complete general education (GE) courses in order to transfer into one of their 23 campuses, apply to one of thier campuses, or graduate from one of their campuses. There are some exceptions to this rule. The list below illustrates the different ways students can be exempt.
For students who have prior learning at the college level, the CSU provides a few ways to meet requirements for general education:
- Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from the CSU are cleared of lower division requirements
- Students who hold a bachelor’s degree from the UC are cleared of all general education requirements
- Individual courses and exams in general education subjects may also be applied to various GE requirements. A recent memorandum was released last month to update systemwide acceptance of standardized exams, including CLEP
- Students with baccalaureate degrees who return to the CSU for a degree in nursing are exempt from all coursework except the coursework that is “unique and exclusively required to earning a nursing degree from that institution.”
This information is extremely helpful particularly to students that are re-entry, adult and continuing students.
College Help: “If you have previous course work from another college, be sure to visit a college counselor asap with official transcripts.”
