College Textbook Forms in the Digital Age
Published on Thursday, July 7th, 2011 by Dania Mallette Category: College Tips
Since the booming popularity of the Internet and society’s fascination with the Digital Age, many things have undergone complete transformations. Colleges and universities are no exception to this rule. There are now online educational institutions, virtual classrooms and a digital way to obtain a degree. So it only makes sense that textbooks and other academic materials are now readily available with a few clicks of the mouse.
Not Quite Out With the Old…
Before diving into the new generation of online college textbooks, it should be mentioned that traditional textbooks continue to be a staple in any college student’s life. Although the Internet now holds a number of titles to complement a student’s course load, this hasn’t led to the extinction of hard copy books or important academic and research resources like libraries. Depending on what a student’s degree program is, chances are there is going to be at least one or two classes that still require the purchase of a good old fashioned college textbook to lug around campus.
Online Materials
These days more and more college professors are simplifying things for their students by allowing them to gain access to textbooks on the Internet. In fact, oftentimes the reading material assigned are not textbooks at all but articles or selected paragraphs of content that students can view online. Reading this type of content on the Internet is not only convenient and less time consuming for students, it’s also more eco-friendly.
EBooks
For college courses that require full-length textbooks, the good news is that this type of academic material is also available on the Internet for students to read at their leisure. There are a number of websites devoted to publishing entire textbooks into a digital format, which are commonly referred to as eBooks, with various options for viewing the information. Additionally, many of these eBook sites offer this service free of charge, which is obviously a very cost-effective method for students to get their work done without having to spend money on yet another college-related expense or printing out pages of paper.
Being able to access eBooks on the computer is ideal for students that typically are not fans of traditional reading. Because everything is in an online format, it removes the feeling of sitting down and reading a regular textbook, which is perceived by some students as a boring activity.
Downloadable Textbooks
Just as students have the ability to read full length textbooks online, there are also downloadable versions. This option gives college students the opportunity to not only download the entire textbook as a readable file on their laptop or desktop, they’re also able to print out either the entire text or certain pages as needed. Being able to use downloadable textbooks is a great way to condense the number of actual textbooks a student has to carry. Imagine being able to carry around the majority of your books as files on your computer…it doesn’t get any better than that.
When choosing college courses, be sure to note what textbooks are required for each and which ones offer downloadable versions or can be accessed online. Just a few minutes of research can save you a lot of money in this area.
