Scholarships for College

Scholarships for College

We will be featuring a College Scholarships series covering personal statements, applications, letters of recommendations, and how to locate a scholarship.  Feel free to ask any questions or provide any resources you think might add to the topic of scholarships for college students.

Personal statements

Personal statements are also known as application essays or goal statements.  Personal statements for scholarships should showcase your accomplishments in a way that follows the directions given on the scholarship application.  This scholarship essay should be autobiographically focused or one that highlights your goals and accomplishments and the challenges you have overcome.

Each scholarship has its own requirements.  Make sure you follow their instructions perfectly to ensure your best opportunity.  Keep things such as an exact length, topic(s), or specific questions in mind when creating your personal statement.

Personal statements are very important in the scholarship application process.  When you are applying to a competitive scholarship, where all applicants will have similar grades and long lists of experiences, a personal statement is the deciding factor.  Use this opportunity to address any interruptions in your transcript, low grades or withdrawals, low test scores, or any other obstacles or challenges you might have faced in college or high school.

How to write a great personal statement for scholarships?

One of the best ways to set yourself apart from the competition is to make your personal statement just that, personal.  Sit down and create a brainstorm recalling experiences and writing them out on a sheet of paper some of the following points:

  1. A memorable accomplishment in your life
  2. Extracurricular activities you have been engaged in, what role did you play
  3. Work experiences that you’ve had, what were your job responsibility
  4. Volunteer experience you have,  what did you do,  where, and for how long
  5. What type of personal adversity have you overcome, what steps did you take to overcome them
  6. What future roadblocks do you envision along your educational journey
  7. What skills and qualities do you see that you possess
  8. What skills and qualities will help you in college

Once you do your brain storm, map out your educational and career goals.  Write four short paragraphs touching on the following:

  1. What do you want to study in college
  2. What are your career goals
  3. What steps have you taken to prepare for this career

Who can help you write a personal statement?

If you are in college, visit your Learning Center and seek out help from tutors.  You can also use campus resources such as Counselors to proof read you’re your personal statement and give you feedback.  Friends and peers are also a valuable resource to use to catch any grammar edits needed or simply to tell you if it makes sense.

Tips for a successful scholarship personal statement:

  1. Do Your Essay Early To Get Help
  2. Allow yourself enough time to ask for help
  3. Have others proof your personal statement
