Capella University is an online for-profit college that is 100% virtual offering a variety of online college courses. They do not have a physical campus where students can go and sit in lecture. It was established in 1991 by Dr. Harold Abel and Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka. Abel and Shank wanted to create an adult friendly environment that enhanced the educationally disadvantaged such as adults and other underserved populations that were not being served in traditional universities.
Earlier this week, Capella University named Larry Isaak, a leader and advocate in higher education, as its next president. With nearly 10 years of experience as a chancellor of the North Dakota System, President Isaak will now commence his position come November. Currently, Capella University has an interim president who will remain with the institution in a different position and capacity.
It’s important to note that Capella University is an accredited university and is currently not in the 2010 US News ranked the schools list. However, it did receive the distinction as being ranked 23 out of 44 Best accredited online universities in 2009.
