The ability for college students to pay for school is dismal.  As the economy continues to stall, the real estate market continues to be in the gutter, students are seeking education to better themselves and their future’s financial security.  One of the biggest obsiticles to going to college is the price tag that comes with it.  Many students find a way to finance their education by applying for financial aid, applying for college scholarships, grants, and federal student loans.

What is Missouri doing that is so different?

MOHELA, which stands for the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority set aside $30 million in scholarships for college yesterday afternoon.  Their plan is to distribute the money to Missouri students during the upcoming school year.  Here’s the kicker, MOHELA has been around for about 30 years.  They have forgiven loans for students upwards of $30 million to student loan borrowers.

According to the St. Louis Business Journal,

‘The board made the decision in response to the threat state budget cuts pose in the areas of higher education and scholarships, and the affect such pressures could have on students’ abilities to pay for college.

This is a very unique one-time gain the organization received, and I’m not sure it will ever happen again,” Shaffner said. “The sense of urgency is great, and the need is real and right now. And a Missouri resident who gets a college education could be considered the best investment in economic development.’

This means that the executive director of the organization will be working side by side with Gov. Jay Nixon’s office and the Department of High Education to plan everything out and go through the details.

More and more students are looking for ways to pay for college.  Taking the model that Missouri is pursuing and having organization step up to help in college scholarships in a time of dismal outlook for students is crucial.  Students are getting into more debt than they can handle with students loans.  One way to offset having to resort to student loans would be to research and apply for college scholarships.  Depending on your college major, there may be a scholarship for you.
