Before I get into resume tips and blunders to avoid, it’s helpful to know what an actual resume is and what it’s for.  What is a resume?  A resume is a brief document that summarizes your education, employment and volunteer history.  It also serves to highlight any accomplishments, activities, skills, and honors you may have.  The hard part is getting this to fit in one page.  If you have years and years of experience, it’s perfectly acceptable to have a 2 page resume as long as all the experience listed is relevant to the job you are applying for.

When applying for a job, the resume will get you the interview.   You don’t need anything flashy, but you do need it to look professional.  By professional, you will be safer staying more conservative as you can see with the samples below.

There are 3 types of resume’s that you can choose to create:

Chronological Resume

Here are some bullets that describe a chronological resume.

  • Presents your work experience in chronological order, beginning with most recent
  • Works best when your experience closely parallels the position to which you are applying for
  • Shows consistency in your work history
  • If you have extended gaps or little experience, this style may not be the best for you

Functional Resume

Here are some bullets that describe a functional resume.

  • Lists your experience based on skills headings, not in chronological order
  • Work history is summarized at the bottom of the page
  • Highlights your acquired skills; less emphasis on where and when you developed them
  • This style works best for career changers or for those going into fields with little or no experience

Combination Resume

Here are some bullets that describe a combination resume.

  • Combination of Chronological and Skills format
  • Work experience is listed under skill headings
  • Employment history is listed chronologically under its own heading
  • Great for highlighting consistent themes in your experience
  • Makes it easy for employers to identify skill areas and your employment history

In later posts, I will go into each resume in more depth and show examples of how to properly structure them.  We will also be doing resumes for our readers in later posts and have the before and after for everyone to see.
